First Position

You know a movie is good when it makes you cry. Not cry in the sense that the plot in front of you isn’t your life, but cry because something inside of you is struck. On my flight down to Miami, I felt this embodiment in the documentary First Position.

First position documents the story of six young dancers as they prepare for and compete in the Youth America Grand Prix. While I only had a short stint of dancing in pre-K, in my eyes, there may be no other art form that’s as fascinating to see being made as dance. In the documentary, both on and offstage, the pirouettes and jumps seem effortless. You truly get drawn into the back stage life that these dancers partake in.
